Most people understand that the most important part of getting clean and sober from an addiction is going to rehab. However, if you’ve never dealt with addiction yourself, you may not be aware that there are multiple types of rehab and that each one is geared to a different type of situation. We generally think of rehab as having someone go to a facility to get treatment, but that doesn’t always have to be the case. Knowing the difference between inpatient and outpatient rehab can make the difference between a successful recovery and another relapse.
At Rise in Malibu, we understand that each client needs the right type of treatment for them. We believe that everyone deserves the best treatment, no matter their needs. Contact us today to learn more about our drug and alcohol addiction treatment in Malibu.
What is Outpatient Treatment?
Inpatient and outpatient treatment are similar in that they both provide treatment for those struggling with addiction, but outpatient treatment takes a different approach. Outpatient treatment is a type of treatment where the client comes to a treatment facility and receives treatment, such as therapy or other services, and then leaves the facility.
Generally, during an outpatient program, the client comes a few times a week for different treatment types and checks in with staff to ensure they are maintaining sobriety and following their treatment plan. Clients are not supervised around the clock the way they are with other types of treatment, but they have some accountability.
There are two types of outpatient treatment, standard and outpatient care, and intensive outpatient treatment. Under a standard program, the client may attend treatment 2-3 times a week with minimal supervision. The intensive program has clients attend treatment 4-5 times a week and has more check-ins and supervision to keep the client compliant with the program.
Those in an outpatient program will still typically have access to support services, though they may have to come to the treatment facility to receive them.
What is the Difference Between Inpatient and Outpatient Rehab?
There are a few main differences between inpatient and outpatient rehab. Firstly, the client does not stay at the facility with outpatient rehab; they can come and go as they please with minimal supervision. Inpatient rehab requires the client to stay at the facility where they are monitored 24/7. The minimal length of stay is usually 30 days.
Second, while clients have access to the same types of treatment with outpatient care, it is not as easily accessible. This can make it harder to get help when you are dealing with a sudden urge to use or a crisis situation.
Third, there is less access to medical support for ongoing health issues related to addiction. In some cases, the complications as a result of addiction and withdrawal can be life-threatening, particularly for those with underlying health issues that are made worse by withdrawal.
Lastly, outpatient rehab is less private than an inpatient treatment stay. Inpatient treatment is designed for those who need extra help and supervision but don’t want the world to know all about their struggles with addiction. Inpatient care is also the choice many people make if they’ve had issues with relapsing before so that they can get the maximum amount of supervision and accountability while undergoing treatment.
