How to Find the Right Addiction Treatment Program

An addiction treatment program helps you or another person you know stop the addiction, keep the addiction stopped, and be productive in society and at work and home. Finding the right addiction treatment program can be the key to successes in a long sobriety journey.

Types of Treatment Programs

There are several different types of programs available to treat substance abuse. Some are more common than others and each program may not be right for everyone.

Residential/Inpatient: This is the most intensive type of treatment and can be used for those with severe addictions. When in this treatment program, you will live at a specialized facility for a certain period of time. The amount of time will depend on the treatment needed and the facility. There are some programs in a hospital that are only for a few days, while others may stay at a facility for 30 days. Some private facilities will offer programs that are longer than 6 months. The most common is 20 days. This treatment can be good for those who are having issues staying sober. They will need more structure and guidance. This treatment provides a stable and safe place for an individual to focus. During treatment, you attend individual therapy, classes, and group therapy to learn about living without addiction.

Intensive Outpatient: This treatment is similar to an inpatient program when it comes to education and therapy. Programs last anywhere from three to five hours a day, but instead of living at a facility you are able to stay at home for the treatment. You can have commitments or family that prevent you from being able to go away for treatment. Some programs run during the evenings so you can go to work or school while still in treatment.

Sober Living: Many people may move into a sober living home after a residential or inpatient treatment program. This is a house or community of people who are all in recovery. This program allows structure and accountability that an addict may not have at home. Rules will need to be followed and residents may have responsibilities or chores within the house. However, they still get to live on their own but with support and structure.

Outpatient: With this treatment, patients will attend group therapy on a weekly basis. Depending on the program, it could be once a week or more. This helps someone manage their addictive behaviors. Another form of this treatment is individualized counseling. This form of treatment is recommended for people who are further along in their sobriety journey.

Support Groups: Many are already familiar with free support groups that can help. Many of these groups are called 12-step groups and some examples are Narcotics Anonymous or Alcoholics Anonymous. These groups are usually free to those who have a problem and can offer support for those struggling. You gain a sense of community with your peers that can help you on your journey to sobriety.

Behavioral Therapy Programs: Many programs will incorporate behavioral therapy but some patients respond better to a program that is dedicated to therapy and discussion. These programs may also be beneficial for those who have already completed an intensive form of rehab and are looking to continue their sobriety journey.

The treatment center you choose should help you with gaining motivation to stay sober and create an environment where you feel comfortable.

Things to Consider When Choosing

There are different factors you should consider when deciding which treatment is right for you or a family member. If it’s possible, it’s recommended to visit before you actually go into treatment. This way you can see first hand if it is the right fit.

The Severity of Addiction: If you are struggling with an intense addiction then a residential treatment program may be necessary before you move toward less intensive treatments.

If You Need to Detox: Certain substances can be hard to stop and it’s often necessary to have medical detoxification. Some treatment programs, especially residential ones, will have a detox period.

If You Have a Co-Occurring Condition: These are behavioral or mental disorders that can play into your addiction. This includes anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder, and depression. If you have one of these conditions, you may want to search for a treatment facility that specializes in this type of treatment.

What You Can Afford: Medical insurance can cover some forms of treatment, so see what your insurance will cover to help you make the decision. If your insurance can’t cover the treatment that is best for you then you will need to decide how much you can spend on treatment. Some treatment programs can work with you or may offer discounts. Some programs are free.

Location: Many people want to choose an addiction treatment center in another part of the country in order to distance themselves from a situation that supports the addiction. The drawback of this is that you do need to make plans to also have support in your hometown after treatment has ended.
